A Note for Beginners

and New Musicians

In six years of teaching music, I’ve heard one thing over and over:

“I’d love to learn an instrument… but I have zero musical talent.”

In my experience, that’s never the case.

What most people are missing isn’t talent—it’s training.

I firmly believe music is a skill anyone can learn with the right guidance and dedication.

If you enjoy music, you can learn to play music.

About Michael Myhan

Michael has been a musician for 25 years, and a music teacher since 2019. Growing up in Laguna Beach, he was exposed to a wide range of music by his sister – and now returns the favor by teaching her son, his 5 year-old nephew.

He’s also worked as a composer, producer, and ghostwriter for major record labels, and still welcomes opportunities to collaborate.

What We Teach

Piano & Keyboard

Piano is a common and excellent choice for new musicians of all ages. Kids as young as 3 can start and make meaningful progress, although typically, we start children at 6.

(Piano was Michael’s first instrument, too.)

For all ages, we focus on learning in a way that motivates you – or your child – to practice and excel.

Guitar (All Styles)

Acoustic, electric, rhythm, lead, solo… we teach guitar to all ages and skill levels.

In many ways, guitar is the inverse of piano: difficult to start, but easier to master.

For example, many of our teen & adult students have tried to learn guitar before, but stopped short of mastering bar chords. We can help.

Ukulele

Ukulele is another fantastic starter instrument, especially for younger children, seniors, and others with limited finger strength.

It’s very easy to pick up. If you’ve tried to learn an instrument before and found it frustrating, it can be a great starting point – and perhaps a gateway to learning other instruments in the future.

Drums

Drums are unique among the instruments we teach: playing drums is a very physical activity that releases a lot of energy.

Drums are also, generally, the loudest and most expensive of the instruments we teach.

Older students often appreciate the workout, too.

Music Theory

Every single song in the entire world uses the same building blocks: melody, harmony, rhythm, dynamics, and timbre – whether it’s Bach concertos and Mozart or Taylor Swift and Imagine Dragons.

No matter what, all our students learn the building blocks of music.

We also teach students preparing for AP Music exams, music school auditions, job applications.

Production & Songwriting

We’ve helped students applying to Juilliard, Berklee, USC, Northwestern, and many other colleges and conservatories of music.

Michael has also worked as a composer and producer with various genres.

Many of our former students have gone on to work for major record labels and musical theatre.

Student Testimonials

Michael and his student Nancy Dabu, smiling behind a keyboard at her wedding.

“I hired Michael to teach piano to my daughter. After awhile, I realized I was jealous of what she was learning and started joining her lessons.

I’ve actually tried and failed to learn guitar twice. I thought I was hopeless, but, I just never met the right teacher.

Now I play guitar, ukelele, and piano. Michael is fantastic! I’ve referred him to several families; everyone loves him.

With his help, I’ve started arranging covers of my favorite songs, too.”

–Nancy Dabu, Student & Parent

Our neighbor recommended Mickey and I thought we’d give him a try. Mickey has proven to be skilled, knowledgeable, and patient.

My daughter is quite shy and Mickey does a wonderful job helping her feel comfortable during the lessons. He is positive, offering praise and encouragement when needed!

What I love the most, is that Mickey doesn’t talk down to Emerson. She’s only six, but he speaks to her in a way he would a student of any age, imparting knowledge that he deems she’s ready for. He doesn’t “dumb it down” for her and I really appreciate that.

Emerson has only been with Mickey a couple of months, and she’s made remarkable progress!

(In Emerson’s words: “I really like how Mickey helps me learn songs without the music. He is also really nice!”)
